How to Install an Outboard Motor
Outboard motors are a cheap yet effective option when it comes to propelling your watercraft. However, your new outboard motor won’t do you much good if you can’t install it, which is why the experts at East Coast Flightcraft Inc. have created this guide to installing an outboard motor.
The Owner’s Manual
The advice in this article will apply to almost all outboard motors, however, you should still read your owner’s manual for more information about outboard motor installation. Your owner’s manual will be able to tell you about the kinds of model-specific quirks we can’t account for in this guide.
Mounting the Motor
Start by installing your outboard motor’s mounting bracket onto your boat’s transom using the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Then, tighten the screws and secure the bracket using a rope. This can be achieved by tying one end of the rope around the hole in the mounting bracket and then tying the other end of the rope to the boat.
Finding the Correct Angle
If your outboard motor is installed at the wrong angle, it can cause your boat to tilt. While most outboard motors need to be angled parallel to the stern, this is not the case for all models. If you’re not sure which angle your outboard motor requires, check the owner’s manual.
Positioning the Fuel Tank
The next step will be to install the fuel tank. Find a spot within six feet of the motor that is well-ventilated and away from direct sunlight. Once you have found a suitable location, secure the fuel tank using ropes, bungee cords, or straps.
Final Step
Before you take your boat out on the water, double-check that every part of your outboard motor has been attached correctly and is securely fastened. You don’t want anything to slide around or become detached. During your test ride, take things slow until you get the hang of how the boat handles.
