Boat Battery Maintenance
Most modern boats require a working electrical system in order to function, which is why boat owners need to take good care of their boat’s batteries. However, battery maintenance can get complicated. If you are not sure where to start in regard to boat battery maintenance, check out this guide from East Coast Flightcraft Inc.
Clean the Boat Battery
Corrosion can build up on your boat’s batteries over time, diminishing its performance or even causing long-term damage. That is why you should make a habit out of cleaning the battery’s posts with a solution of baking soda and water. You can then lightly grease them with dielectric grease.
Recharge the Battery Often
It is very important that you frequently recharge your boat’s battery. Unlike a car battery, which is designed to be used on a daily basis, you cannot rely on the alternator to keep your boat’s battery charged. Our recommendation is to recharge the battery after every trip, though you should also check your owner’s manual to see what it recommends.
Store the Boat’s Battery Correctly
One more important aspect of boat battery maintenance is proper storage. Always clean and fully charge your boat’s battery before you put your vessel away long-term. Always store the battery in a dry, temperature-controlled location. If you take the right precautions your boat’s battery should work just as well when you take it out of storage as it did before you stored it.
